Hi all,
We are an SME with 51 employees working in the Chemical and Service Industry (water treatment and legionella control). I currently maintain info on both Accident Incident Rates and Accident Frequency Rates.
I would like to benchmark our performance against our industry average. Having checked the HSE website I'm surprised that I couldn't find any statistics on either (despite the service industry being mentioned in R2P2).
A couple of questions therefore;
Does anyone know the average rates for the above industries?
Am I using the right type of measurement for a company of our size?
and, when calculating the Accident Frequency Rate, can someone confirm that the formula is No. of accidents x 100,000 / No. of hours worked?
Thanks
Giles

Formula works if you want to measure per 100,000 hours. Some use a rate per 200,000 or even per 1,000,000 hours.
I would distinguish accident rates by severity of accidents - generally the hierarchy is
- all injury (incl first aid)
- medical treatment case or similar
- lost time injuries
If your company is a member of a trade association (eg Chemical Industries Association) they should have suitable figures. ROSPA may also have info.
You need to make sure you are reporting aginst the same criteria if benchmarking.
