I wondered if anybody had any info regarding hygiene and hand towels.
we have the hand towels on a roll type throughout our factories in the uk. these are changed daily. however some of our staff have been coming back from course saying they've been told that the towels are extrmely un-hygienic.
i'm sure we've been here before, what's the opinion of yourselves, is there any factual reports etcon this subject?
any help/guidance would be great

There is a risk of cross-infection from sharing a hand towel (not entirely different to sharing the same door furniture upon leaving the washroom). Hot air hand dryers can blow contaminated air into breathing zones and paper towels need safe and healthy disposal and can pose a fire risk. Antiseptic type hand sprays are becoming to become more evident these days. So you do a risk assessment for your particular environment and work activity and make your choice. Good hand washing is the important procedure - but we will still walk around with bacteria on our skin.

Depends on your environment really. In high risk environments such as theatre scrubs or sluice rooms these would not be my first choice. It could be argued that food preperation rooms offer significant risks too. A loo used by customers or on a widget manufacturing site is likely to be less of an issue as any contamination is likely to be local. A number of infections can be transmitted by fomites, that is to say an inanimate object capable of harbouring and transmitting infection. Depending on what you do speak to your local EH Dept as they will have access to all sorts of literature, some of it industry specific. For higher risk environments having a word with the cross infection officer of the local NHS Trust may be appropriate.

Tony
