Posted By Cat Hi guys
Anyone have an environmental policy I can look at, I need to write one this week (as usual - last minute) and could do with a head start.
Thanks in advance
Cat

Posted By Robert. If you haven't got the ISO14000 accreditation , why don't you look on the web or EA for some guidance. Is it a policy statement you're after or just to provide sufficient info regarding your company's environmental approach and adopted protective measures?

Posted By Cat I really need to provide sufficient info on what we intend to do environmentally. I am intending on going into this further next year but as yet I just need something to show where we are and our intentions.

Posted By Nick Tracey Cat One of the main reasons ISO 140001 Standard requires an Initial Environmental Review is carried out, is to identify where you are now and what the organisations objectives are. Cutting and pasting from other organisations policies is exactly what was wrong 30 years ago when safety policies were first required. I suggest you should ask whoever asked for the policy to make their thoughts and commitments clear in order to draft some words, you might then find their true commitment. Is it the policy words they want or to improve their environmental performance?

I wood heed Nick's words of advice
Adapting someone's policy to your own organisation is not the best way forward, unless it is just a paper exercise.
If you are serious about implementing an Environmental Management system, then do the job properly, Identify your aspects & impacts, review the legislation, determine the strengths & weaknesses of the organisation, and then implement your management programme (inc objectives & targets) and only at this point will you have the required info to tailor the policy best suited to your organisation

Posted By Robert. I see where you're coming from Cat. Suggestion---consider integrating your (local)environmental control measures along with your (safety) risk assessments. ie Spillage contols.water discharges, generic local environment etc etc. It is an approach the I've used and works well.

Posted By David Balkwell Hi Cat Dont know if you made much progress and Ive only just seen your request I have spent the last 18yrs involed in Management Systems and have over 3500 days of Certification Assessment experience against ISO9001 ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 (soon to be BS18001) I spent 10 years with one of the largest certification bodies and the last 8 working for 10 certification bodies (and carried out their 1st Environmental Assessment BS7750) - plus consultancy and training Im checked every year by UKAS the CBs regulator (last year 6 times)As the CBs Accreditor they ensure the CBs undertake their Registrations/Certifications correctly RE POLICY STATEMENT ISO14001:2004 and its requirements for Policy Statement are quite prescriptive (by design) Firstly do you have a copy of ISO14001:2004 ? Second go to the section on Policy Statement clause 4.2 and check what you written against each of the requirements If you have done one email it me and I would be happy to check its compliance RE POSITION STATEMENT & PLAN If its overall intentions re environmental then Alex and Co are spot on However you really need to be thinking about a plan and a gap analysis is a good starting point - It allows you to get sight of all the tasks ahead and recognise significance of your environmental aspects When you get into the thick of it just a word of caution dont underestimate the requirements relating to evaluation of compliance which is of course driven from good recognition of whats applicable (ie legislation and requirements - two different things) their impact on aspect evaluation/determination of significance/objective and target setting/operational control and evaluation of compliance As I said Im quite happy to check your policy compliance with ISO14001:2004 many dont comply when it come to assessment David davidbalkwell@mobileemail.vodafone.net
