Hi I was wondering if anyone could advise me the following?
Can anyone tell me if there is a requirement for fire extinuighers to be placed away from radiators and if so what distance they should be away from them?
Also we have a large kitchen/canteen area in our workplace at the moment there are 2 fire extinguishers in the kitchen area along with fire blankets, does anyone have any info as to the requirements of how many extinguishers there should be for the area covered in the kitchen?
I would be grateful for any advice.

I think it is 1 extinguisher per 200msq of floor area. I'm sure somebody will correct me if i'm wrong

Our kitchens have 1 X water, 1 X foam, 2 X fire blanket, 1 X Wet chemical for the deep fat fryers, 1 X CO2 and 1 X dry powder.
Possibly overkill but we have a bar area, buffet area, and main restaurant. The whole restuarant is designed for 2000 people.
There are additional water extinguishers on the exit routes from the dining areas as well.
We have placed extinguishers every 25m throughout the building and in the same position vertically throughout each floor.
The one per 200sqM works and provides for sufficient cover.

Position relative to radiators will depend on how hot the extinguishers are going to get. Check the spec for the extinguishers and the recommended temperature range (should be on the extinguisher body, if not - contact the supplier). Most extinguishers I have encountered are OK up to 60 degC - so better to keep them away from very hot radiators.

I think you have good advice on the extinguishers, but what do you think the fire blankets are for ?
just checking really, but they are not for rolling up people with their clothes on fire. That just ensures that they are done to a nice turn. Throw water.
Fire blankets are probably ok for smothering a cooking fire but I have no memory of one being used successfully (correct me someone)
In a kitchen they hang around so long without use that they tend to absorb oil and grease from the atmosphere. Making a rather nice wick.
