We've got a young worker starting with us in January. How do people conduct these sorts of risk assessments? do people use a checklist sort of approach?

The HSE website has a good section about this - one of the items on the "Health & Safety topics" list is indeed "Young People".

My advice would be to treat them as tough they are your own kids coming to your workplace. How would you protect them? Then apply that process.

It's worth looking up the definition of "young person" as apposed to children.

I've emailed you a checklist that forms the basis of a risk assessment.
