Posted By Fitzy Hi All, Happy new year. Was hoping someone could help me with a query regarding the specified distance and even if there is one on how far a smoking area should be away from a store for flammable materials. I know it should be a safe distance and a risk assessment should also be done - I just want to clarify if this 'distance' exists and if so what it is. Thanks

Posted By Jane Blunt The distances depend on many variables, including the quantity of material, what it is stored in (metal container?), its physical form (liquid, solid or what?) and its nature (extremely flammable, highly flammable or what?). There is a lot of useful information in HSG51 'Storage of flammable liquids in containers', but I note that the most up-to-date version that I can find is referring to old legislation. the legislation that governs the control of risk from such materials is now the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regs.
