Hi there,

i'm looking for advice regarding the storage of outboard motors.

Currently they are kept inside (due to security, theft etc with them being outside), however, they still contain petrol, 2-3 litres.

This isn't emptied out as the motors are required to be used at anytime.

Also, would it be more of a risk to contend with the vapour left if they were emptied? (sorry if incorrect, not sure).

Is it acceptable to store these inside, we're talking about 7 or 8 with a 2-3 litre capactity.

If so, then what things should we consider?

If not, then I assume it will have to be outside and appropriate locked.

Thanks in advance

Speaking from a motor vehicle and plant background, cars, bikes, vans, genny's etc, I can say that all are stored with varying amounts of fuel and generally considerably more than 2/3 litres with no problems.

Presumably the outboards are all stored, and fastened/secured upright on racks, with the caps on, they are not fueled in the same area (in case there are hot engines/sources of ignition in vicinity), drip trays, spill measures, fire fighting equipment provided etc. etc

It would be very unlikly that the outboats would consist solely of petrol

Depending on size, it is possible that some may consist of a two (ore even four) stroke oil/petrol mix (the oil used to lubricate and prevent the internals siezing up)

As an outboard owner myself (and also previously working for an international hotel who used outboards as part of the fishing packages offered) the most common problem encountered when storing such outboards was the evaporation of the petrol itself.

The quantities conserned apparently will pose little or no risk providing the appropriate precautions as philby rightly highlighted, are implemented.

A good source of information to utilise is to contact the outboard manufacturers direct, Evinrude & Yamaha are identical, there is also Nissan, Johnson and Mercury

Thanks for your help.

They are currently stored upright against a wall, although unsecured, however, this isn't difficult to rectify and ensure they are secured.

I will contact who you say and the manufacturers to see if they offer any further advice.

Thanks
