Posted By James Midlake All, My understanding on harness inspection is that it should be done at least yearly and would normally be performed by the same company who performs the insurance inspection on your lifting equipment? ( I understand the need for interim and other inspections - I am just trying to nail down the requirement for an outside body to inspect and certify the equipment. What is the common practise here ? ) regards Midlake

Posted By Antony McManus As far as I'm aware there is no need for an outside body to do the inspections. I worked for a major scaffolding company and we sent our 'stored' harnesses to an outside body purely for the shear numbers involved. However, as the company policy dictated, I carried out all the monthly checks and was trained to do so. It may be prudent to look for an accredited training company to satisfy your requirements. E-mail me off - line and I will give you the details. For further info, read indg367 - Inspection of fall arrest equipment made from webbing or rope. Cheers Tony Mc

Posted By David AB Thomas As AMcM mentions, refer to INDG367: http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg367.pdf Detailed inspections need not be by an outside party - the requirement is for competence (viz. relevant knowledge, skills and experience).

Posted By David Tilsley-Curtis James You are unfortunately incorrect in the time period for formal inspections. The harness, lanyard etc.. should be inspected before use by the user each time, and the HSE are now recommending the formal recording of an inspection on the product history sheet at least every six months. If the equipment is in near daily use, they require this to be reduced to three months. There is now requirement to engage a third party to carryout the inspections, however the persons undertaking them must be competent to do so. I carryout an large number of training courses on t eh use and inspection of harness type equipment and would be happy to send you some details if required. Regards David

Posted By JasonGould Each occasion before use Circumstances liable to jeopardise safety of equipment Interim inspections dependant upon environment Detailed inspections (3 or 6 monthly dependant on task and environment i.e. demolition) Is the above info out of date now as I have just finnished creating a A4 chart for all inspections and specific RA's. Now I am in doubt :( I cannot trace the exact document that stated the 3 - 6 months but do remember the words demolition and work involving risk of damage to above. I think many go by the 6 month rule though I think it was the HSE
