Hi all over there (happy 2007):

pls, i have two questions about the legionella:

1- Is there any instrument that one can use so as to carry out legionella test OR this must be done in a lab?

2- Is there any specific frequency (legal) for such test OR it depend on the situation?

Thanks in advance

The answers to your two questions depend on your particular circumstances.

The UK Health and Safety Executives (HSE) Aproved Code of Practice and Guidance (ACop)
Legionnaires disease: Control of legionella bacteria in water systems L8 recommends that routine testing for legionella bacteria in wet cooling systems be carried out at least quarterly, more frequently when a system is being commissioned, or if the bacteria has been identified on a previous occasion.

If you go to:

www.legionellacontrol.co...e-legionella-control.htm

You should be able to find all the information to fit your requirements.
Good luck

You can get dip slides and an incubator and do the tests yourself. Theses are not very accurate but will indicate the presence of the bacteria, and then have a lab test done on a sample.
I assume you have undertaken a risk assessment and have introduced the biocide and cleaning regimes required.

Alan & Barry thank you very much for your responses.

Actually I asked because my company will lunch its 40 towers residential complex within two months and the conducted RA identified the legionella hazard in systems such as chilled water system, underground water tanks, water-based fire fighting system, water features (all these systems are subject to PPM program & the legionella test will be applied also as a control measure).

once again many thanks

Amjad
