I am a little confused if this is a confined space or not. I am leaning towards it is but am open to debate on it.
Work is carried out in one entry and exit only manhole entry to a underground void where a existing domestic gas pipe runs.
Is gas in pipes still a specified risk?
If pipe is damaged either over time or by accident, then gas could build up over time.
Likelihood is very slim however and work not taken out on gas pipe itself but something else unrelated.

I have a lot of experience of confined spaces. Without seeing the location and knowing the surrounding environment, it is hard to be certain.
However the excellent ACOP defines "any location by virtue of it's confined nature........" So, I would say yes, confined space.
I always go for caution in confined space work; get it wrong, you kill someone.
At then end of the day you have to manage the risk to an acceptable level. Using the standard confined space approach would surely do this.

I would also say yes, as you only have one entrance/exit and even if the risk of gas building up is remote, it is a still a risk and you would be required to take steps to minimise the risk.

Sounds like it may be a confined space by virtue of it being a manhole environment rather than merely due to the gas pipe being present.
