Posted By Claire C Dear All, I work within the Construction Industry and have been asked to find out if a CSCS Card could be deemed equivalent to a ECITB Safety Passport? Your thoughts on this matter are apprecaited. Regards Claire

Posted By I McDonald Hi Claire The answer is basically "NO". Even with the HSE promoting the concept of contractors challenging Clients regarding the suitability and value of other schemes, sites specifying ECITB/CCNSG Passports will not recognise CSCS as CSCS does not require mandatory training (i.e. nothing to compare the two schemes against. CSCS sites will not recognise ECITB/CCNSG as CITB have a strangle hold on the scheme (CITB non profit making organisation? I think not!). Ian

Posted By I McDonald Claire forgot the other issue. ECITB/CCNSG is only health and safety based. CSCS is supposed to be geared around competence and Health and Safety is only one element of the scheme. Hope that clarifies. Ian

Posted By Jim Walker I agree with Ian on this. CSCS scheme (so far as H&S element is concerned) is a joke. The penny is beginning to drop and CITB will have to rethink their perceived view that they have a stranglehold on the rest of us. Stand by for Dave Wilson's rant..........

Posted By Claire C Thanks for your assistance it is appreciated. I suppose a two day health and safety course cannot really be compared to a 45 minute test. I have since spoken with my boss and will now speak to the Client to find out what their expectations are for the site. Thanks again for your views. Claire

Posted By Jim Walker 45 minutes! Our lads are doing this stupid touch screen test. We have to drive to centre 20 miles away, most get there, take the test & get back in just over an hour!

Posted By Robert. Is CSCS losing credibility? I think so. Clients, including L.As, a couple of years ago were asking for them before contracts were confirmed. Now? CCNSG, or SPA and other passports is the norm. I've even seen Contractor assesment documents that only ask for confirmation of asbestos awareness training and nothing else. It may be that safety knowledge seems to be overruling that of skills competence. Even in construction

Posted By Rich256 SO in summary which is the best card to hold? I currently have the CCNSG card and my current employer seem to favour the CSCS card. I've been trying to find out which is the most relevent. Thanks Rich

Posted By Dave Wilson All depends on the industry sector you are working in, we have CCNSG / SPA/ CSCS as we work in all sectors!

Posted By Derrick Robinson People are missing the point. I am no fan of CSCS but you have to recognise it for what it is, a skill card not a health and safety qualification. A CSCS card says you are a competent steel erector or whatever. I would not comment on how well it achieves this but that is what it is supposed to do. There is an obligation on all employers to provide appropriate health and safety information and training in addition to someones basic trade skills. If that needs to be more than in house then the person needs to attend an appropriate health and safety course which is what CCNSG is. The people I am responsible for carry both, CSCS to prove that they are steel erectors and CCNSG to prove that they are health and safety trained

Posted By Chris Bramall In my company we work for both power generation who require the CCNSG Passport to Safety and Water Industry who require the CSCS card. Fortunatley the we use the JIB scheme which is CSCS affiliated and accepts the CCNSG card as meeting the H&S test component for the CSCS Card. I think that in practice a 3 year refresher of basic H&S points covered in the CCNSG is good practice compared to just a touch screen test.

Posted By Stephen Sherratt I have read this tread with great interest, we have used the CCNSG passport since 2000 and late last year I started to look around for alternatives. Since we work in the food and dairy industry I became interested in SPA card as they have a Hygiene Module but discovered that they no longer had accreditation IOSH that lead me to the IOSH Working Safely Passport as an alternative to CCNSG. We are currently changing over to IOSH Working Safely Passports as the CCNSG come up for renewal. The feed back is that it has been found to be punchy and well received by our shop floor sheet metal workers. CONSG is largely aimed at Petrochemical Construction, with our work mainly in the dairy industry we have been able to drop the Display Screen module for Food Hygiene module (based on our policy) since the IOSH Working Safely Passport is now delivered in house we are able to base the training on our COSHH, RODDOR and our actual Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of work. So far so good. Stephen Sherratt
