Posted By Homer We have two groups of nursery children visiting one of our sites next month, has anyone done a risk assessment for such a visit. They will be under 100% supervision. Would like to offer them an opportunity to sit in cab of JCB with a driver and carry out some carefully planned fake works. Can anyone help? Many thanks.

Posted By Dean Stevens Homer I don't mean to sound funny on this one but my risk assessment on this would read "Risks to high - Cancel visit". Is there going to be supervision for each and every child? Are all working practices going to be paused until the visit has finished? Are all hazardous tools going to be put away for the visit? Is all access to ladders / scaffolds going to be denied during visit? Are you going to have PPE that fits each and every child? (As per site safety notice), i could go on...... The communal benefits that these visits bring are great but i'm sure that the hazards would far outweigh this. Have not had much to do with construction sites, apart from when our factory was having an atrium built on the front, but i am aware that they are one of the most hazardous places to work.(it's just a shame that some of the building gangs don't realise this, not wearing hats, hi viz etc) As i said i didn't want to sound funny but i think that you would be taking some enormous risks by allowing this visit to commence. If you do go ahead with it, can i be nosy and ask for a copy of your risk assessment, it would just be intersting to see how you have controlled all the hazards identified. Good luck. dean

Posted By Homer I'm more organised than you think. Children will receive a short guided tour with two children to every adult ratio. All site personnel will be briefed prior to visit to increase awareness and children will not be placed in any close proximity to hazardous works, of any kind. Access to scaffolds will be prohibited. Where and if we have an opportunity for some hand son experience, this area will be isolated from main site and it will be a mock up only. PPE, junior tabards ordered and hard hats, children will wear wellies and good outdoor clothing.

Posted By Dean Stevens Homer You ARE more organised than i thought. Sorry, i didn't mean to come across as sounding so objective, was just offering my views on the subject. As i have said the communal benefits that these visits bring are enourmous and i'm sure the kids will have a great day, i wish that i had the chance to drive a JCB as a child. Good luck on your visit. Dean.

Posted By John Watson Fantastic, well done on your can do attitude. Hope it goes well. I do have the chance as a child to sit in a JCB cab after school for weeks on end (the legislators today would have a field day) I remember it to this day, loved it. These are the sort of things we need to enthuse our children with today. Regards John

Posted By John Watson American Adventure has just closed down (or at least is not reopening for the new season) so I don't think you would get any joy, but might be worth a try. Regards John

Posted By Pete48 Homer, well done. Looks good to me. Have the school contacted you yet? They have to complete their own risk assessment for such an off-site visit and may have useful support for you based on their skill and experience in supervising children. They will also advise you of any relevant personal or individual factors that may affect your assessment. If they haven't been in touch, you may want to make the call to them. Good luck and I hope it goes down well. Have you got the I-Pods loaded with Bob the Builder and the JCB song yet????!!
