Our fleet of vans are small Kubastar vans (the smallish car/van things). The lads have to carry ladders on the roof for some of their work, which results in the ladders overhanging if you know what I mean.
Know I think this is a bit of a problem, but do any of you think its a serios concern? Is there anything in legislation or the highway code about it?

For non 'large goods vehicles' the 'industry standard' tends to look like a grubby off-white rag tied to the end of the ladder to indicate it's presence. There must, however, be something more 'official' than this. The Highway Code signs for large goods vehicles suggested by Renny seem a much better option but it would be worth getting an opinion from the Dept for Transport or RoSPA with regard to ladder overhangs at the front and rear - unless someone here has the answer.

CODE OF PRACTICE
Safety of Loads on Vehicles
The Road Traffic Act 1991 Introduced provisions into the Road Traffic Act 1988
A vehicle carrying a load or a vehicle fitted with a special appliance or apparatus that
overhangs the load area may require special markings. If there is a rearward projection
between 1m and 2m the overhang must be made clearly visible to other road users. If there is
a forward or rearward projection exceeding 2m or there is a projection on either side of the
vehicle of more than 305mm or the overall width of a vehicle or any lateral (sideways)
projection exceeds 2.9m then Regulation 82 of The Road Vehicle (Construction and Use)
Regulations 1986 must be complied with. It should be noted that in some circumstances it will
be necessary to notify the police before the vehicle can run on public roads.

Cchange the ladders instead of a two piece ladder get a triple extension ladder, also think about manual handling it is a big problem with ladders not just taking them off and on,but hauling a ladder a-loft there are viable alternatives. I hate this phrase but 'thinks out of the box' sorry. Just seek different providers for different alternatives you might be pleasantly supprised and they will be greatful for the business.

Thanks for the replys.
As i said at the moment we are trying to purchase new vans thats why im doing an RA first. I have decided that all new vans are to be fitted with a device I saw advertiesed which allows the ladders to just slide down off the vans, so that should help from the manual handling point of view.
