Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can help me (again) with this issue. Now i have sourced some flammable liquid wash bottles which are vented as recommended for use with 2-propanol and a blank wash bottle for another degreasing substance- both have low flash points are are extremely flammable. Now i'm reviewing the DSEAR and its associated guidance and i'm getting conflicting advice regarding the storage requirements. (as far as my understanding goes anyway!) Some notes state these type of liquids must be stored in tightly sealed containers and use containers with self-closing lids and other say the bottles must be vented to relieve pressure build from flammable vapours. Is my understanding of vented incorrect in context to these bottles or i'm i just being plain stupid?

Cheers, G

Quick correction - these materials are classed as highly flammble - extremely flammable is another classification altogether.

Normally these types of solvents are stored in closed containers - this is how they are supplied after all ! - but you might expect a store room to be vented. You can get a build-up of vapour in solvent bottles in warm conditions so it's important to leave a good head-space at the top (speaking from bitter personal experience). When the bottles are not in use you ought to keep them in a metal flammables cabinet. You don't want the vapours building up the workshop - you can get quite drunk on 2-propanol vapour (um, personal experience again).
