Posted By Fran Robinson-Holt Hi there, I am trying to find out about hotspur boilers - the domestic oil fuelled heating ones. It is a drip fed boiler probably the original one put in when the house was built in the 1970's My concern is that there could well be issues with asbestos when it is removed given the age of it, such as internal insulation or pipework/gaskets up into the chimney. I am hoping the chosen contractor would remove it intact but as this is my field i have my concerns. I dont have experince of this type of domestic work and this appliance is 200 miles away so i cant check it out myself. I dont want the householder being fobbed off by a calavier tradesman so i am trying to find out what I can prior to anything being done. I guess what i am looking to find out is if anyone knows about this type of boiler, procedures that should be followed within a domestic residence and assurances the householder should be given. Without a sample it is impossible to tell what type if any is involved but perhaps knowledge of the appliance could help. any pointers would be gratefully received. Fran

Posted By Bob Youel please give more info re your involvement - are you the landlord? asbestos & environmental law applies irrespective [domestic or otherwise] & older boilers usually had some sort of asbestos seals etc therein In my exp the average 'house basher' [plumber etc] does not know /care about asbestos & its removal / disposal [please update me if things are different in your area] other issues = the people concerned also need to be competent re gas / electricity sorry if I have given more problems than answers This will be a case of 'you get what you pay for' & rember if you 'DIY' the laws still apply

Posted By Fran Robinson-Holt hi, no i am not the landlord its a family members house. I am well aware of the 'types' of tradesmen around who would have that approach as i have worked with them, therefore i am trying to establish the right approach for someone unknowledgeable. its very hard being so far away from the problem as i am sure you appreciate but i was concerned after a conversation i had last night about it. All tradesmen seem to be qualified but i dont want me relation to be fobbed off with dont worry love etc when there could be real issues to deal with. thanks in advance fran

Posted By Alexander Falconer Hi Fran If you can tell me the manufacturer & model of boiler I will be able to advise you of any such asbestos concerns. We have a list of over 300 known boilers which have asbestos containing materials of some kind (gaskets, liners, etc) Regards Alex

Posted By Bob Youel remember the waste belongs to the housholder e.g. the asbestos and the laws applie all the time so get the contractor pinned down getting complicated isnt it
