Posted By Mike Craven I had always understood that an existing first aider could only do the 2-day requalification training course if their FAW certificate was still in date on day one of the refresher course. I have a first aider who has only just realised that her certificate ran out last week. She can't get time off to do the 4-day course all over again, but wants to re-train. I have just spoken to one of our training providers who claims that they are permitted to provide a 2-day refresher course up to three weeks following expiry of the original first aid certificate.
I haven't come across this before, and most of the first aid training sites that I have looked at seem to state - quite categorically - that you must do the full 4-day course all over again, even if your certificate only ran out yesterday!
Anyone able to confirm the position please?

Posted By Tabs I have recieved dispensation before for a colleague who had been unable to attend in time due to exceptional circumstances, but it took a letter (from the HSE if I recall correctly, it was a few years ago) to achieve it.

Posted By David P. Johnson AFAIK it is possible to do, and depends on the discretion of the training provider.
That said, I have never recommended use of the two day requalification, I think it doesnt give enough time to cover everything that should be covered.

Posted By Ian D. If you ring St Johns etc they will confirm, it is my belief that you have 28 days after expiry date to complete the two day refresher. Previously you had to write to the HSE for special dispensation.

Posted By Alan Hoskins Yes Mike, Ian is correct. The rules were changed a few months ago.
To remain qualified, candidates must now complete a 2 day re-qualification course up to three months before and within 28 days after the expiry date of their FAW certificate.
