Hi
Can anyone provide any information regarding building regs and distances at top of stair ways?
Imagine the scenario, a set of 4 steps rises from one level to another. What is the minimum distance from that top step of the landing area to a set of swing doors in front.
We had an incident we an individual was struck by the swing doors and it propelled them down the floor steps.
Any help, advice or comment would be appreciated
Phil

you need part B Building Regs 2000. You can download it free from the communities and local government web site.

Legally the building had to be constructed in accordance with whatever the Building Regs required at the time. You should also assess the risks of the type of incident that you describe from both the health and safety and fire safety aspects taking into account that it is clearly foreseeable. The references given by the respondents above should help you in this respect. Consideration could be given to whether the doors are required to open in that particular direction (eg for means of escape), whether there are vision panels (and, if so, are they adequate), should warning signs be displayed, etc.
