Posted By AlB A sub contractor is to clean the bricks (externally) on a new build. They are to use a mix of 1 part Hydrochloric Acid 28% to 4 parts water. I need as much information as I can get on this practice, the risks involved with the mix and the measures needed to redce any risk from the substance used. Thanks in advance, AlB

Posted By AlB Thanks David, But I'd expected the environmental hazards to come under risks associated with the use anyway. I'm struggling to find sufficient detail of the risks from a diluted form of hcl 28%.

Posted By Rob Hughes AIB; It has been a while since I did anything like this so could be rusty and always best to check CHIPs anyway but, 28% diluted by 75% comes to 7% which from my memory is an irritant to eyes and skin. However, it depends where they are doing the mixing as 28% strength is hazardous and it will be corrosive. I doubt it will fume (give of a white gas) but in the winter months (as now) may, and this will add an irritant effect for breathing. So to do this safely there will need to be some sort of system to prevent spillage and ideally a closed system for dilution, but I assume this is not possible and so plenty of PPE, supervision and training (hazards, handling etc.). PPE is going to be PVC gauntlets, googles, apron or suit, but I strongly advise that you get hold of a safety data sheet (for 7% and 28%) and ask for the CoSHH assessment or complete one (depending on who is doing the work you or the contractor).
