Hi Folks

I have been asked to identify whether there is such a thing as a HAZOP style for construction / building construction works. I am aware of the various CDM requirements but have not heard of such a HAZOP

Can anyone help?

Thank You

Hi Andrew

Yes HAZOP studies are extensively used in the construction/building industry, particularly where mechanical, electrical and/or hydraulic processes are involved. This would include pumping stations, drainage systems, water/sewage treatment works, environmental control systems within building, any kind of treatment or processing system etc etc.

I hope that this helps.

You could try a structured what if study or an FMEA (failure modes and effects analysis) or FMECA (failure modes, effects and criticality analysis)

Thanks folks,

Oilver, I don't suppose you would have such a template I could have a look at?

Thanks, Andrew

Andrew

Sorry but I haven't, they are usually run by an experienced facilitator who specialises in HAZOP studies. It is usually managed and recorded during the HAZOP session (which can be several days!) using a commercial HAZOP software package.

Sorry can't be much more help.

HAZOP studies are for 'processes' and not for civil works, although the term HAZOP often gets used as a generic for hazard identification type activities

Agree with Anon however; I have used HAZCON formats which are very useful if conducted at the early planning stages of a project.

Hi Andrew,

Hope you are well.

I got an idea I saw something like this on Babtie (or whatever they are called these days)website. Maybe you might ask them.

Andrew, did you discover anything on these HAZCON's? Like you I have been asked to arrange a Construction HAZOP (or HAZCON). I am familier with the HAZOP process but have never been involved in the construction side of things.

Thanks in advance

HAZOPs and HAZCON's are completely different processes, do not get the 2 mixed up. As stated above HAZOPS are often used on construction projects where either processes or systems are involved. This could be for a drainage system, containment system, treatment system, traffic control system, environmental management system in a building or one of many others.

HAZON's look at construction activities rather than the post construction situation which is traditionally where HAZOPS are used.

reference Jim Walker's posting we are now Jacobs U.K. Ltd.

Not allowed to post our website address due to AUGs, but if you want it you could email me.

Whilst HAZOPs originated in the process industries - Google for Trevor Kletz will take you to the seminal guidance, there is no reason why you cannot apply the projects to all sorts of areas of risk including construction projects.

Regards, Peter
