Posted By Carl Dexter I have a meeting next week to discuss the posibility of taking on a Leisure Centres as a client. I am having difficulty in finding information about the H&S requirements for use of gym and swimming pools etc. Can anyone point me in the right direction with regards procedures for gym equipment and use of swimming pools provision of life guards etc.

Posted By Chas Get hold of copies of HSE publication HSG179 - managing H&S in swimming pools, and the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group document called Swimming Pool Water Treatment and Quality Standards (ISBN 0951700766). These will give you an idea of what is required for pools. If you are dealing with spa baths as well keep the control of legionella at the front of your mind as well (See HSE ACOP L8). Hope this helps.

Posted By cara Lifeguard ratios will vary as a result of the types of pools/ situations etc. for example a mis-shaped pool with hidden areas may require more LG's than a standard pool, and more may be required for disabled groups or non-swimmers.
Have a look at the leisure centres SOP's it will give you something to work torwards or against if they are not doing what they should be!

Posted By Aidan Toner Carl- I admire either your bravery or foolishness. I will go along with the former and assume/hope you will advise your client of your knowledge limitations with respect to leisure safety. Immediately -I would refer you to one basic information source which you MUST get your head around. Managing Health And Safety In Swimming Pools HSG 179 (1999) There is a host of leisure standards as recognised by ILAM-(Inst Leisure and Amenity Management)-RLSS and others. Possibly best to go back and ask yourself -am I capable and do I really want to get in this deep(literally) so soon.? Only you can answer that one.

Posted By Andrew Meiklejohn I too would be interested in this as i am probably going to have to write policy - risk assess the gym at our new site..
would have thought manual handling, puwer/loler would be the main areas for that - I had intended getting information from the manufacturer and maybe a sports scientist...

Posted By Terry Bowers The Institute of Sport and Recreation Management (ISRM) have produced a risk assessment manual for leisure centres and swimming pools. This was produced by Peter Mills who is also an IOSH member I believe.
They also offer a consultancy service, provide various training courses and briefing sheets relating to operational and safety issues in the leisure industry.
The Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management (ILAM) is the other main professional organisation.

Incogneato [and sensibly] assess one of the centres that the company already manages to get a view
one of the biggest problems is that many private companies do not have enough lifeguards etc and take some convincing that they are needed and paying customers can be 'testing' if you are not used to them
however it is very rewarding
