Posted By c4sper Hello everyone, I am undertaking the train trainer course in work, I will be submitting it towards my NVQ4 also, killing two birds with one stone so to speak. I work in the waste industry and the previous banksman training courses were only the bare minimum of standards, and for my courses I will be putting together an in-house banksmans safety awareness course for all operatives forming standard hand signals and a take control format to follow, my problem is that my research has found that banksman are not allowed to stop or control traffic on the public highway under chapter 8 RTA 1992.Can anyone give me clarification please. Best Regards Steve

Posted By RP Don't know where you got Chapter 8 or RTA from, think you mean Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual 2006 (revised). Under Road Traffic Law, as amended, you are correct to note that your operatives may not stop traffic or control its movement when working on the highway using hand signals. The trick is, wait for a reasonable gap in traffic before signalling the driver to manoeuvre. Technically, there is a sign that could be used which is in the Traffic Signs Regulations and General directions 2002, the Stop Works sign. You will need to consult with your highways department on it use in such a way.

Posted By c4sper Thanks for your reply ,I knew i`d get a quick response if I made an error ,the stop sign would be inappropriate as I work in Environmental Services, refuse and recycling sectors. Its the reversing of HGVs on the public highway that concerns me also fatigue as the loaders have walked or ran for over eight hours and probably would not feel like aiding the drivers in reversing maneuvers as this is my first course the bare minimum just would not do Best Regards Steve

Posted By RP OK, knew it was an error. Have a look at HSE website for 'Banks Person' or 'Banks man' and Safety Signs and Signal Regulations, lots of useful information which can help. Also: Use your transport department as they may be a member of the FTA (Freight Transport Association) who can also help you out with appropriate training. Although you are not a Highways Department, this would not mean you could not use the STOP WORKS sign with appropriate training on its application.

Posted By Anar Dear All, I need urgent help. Taking into consideration high rate of injuries associated with banks man activities within our company we decided to remove banks men from our trucks. Drivers easily manage themselves. All our trucks have been equipped with all necessary equipments excluding CCTV cameras and we are going to fix them soon. But some of our clients still insists to have banks man in truck despite recommendations taken from guidance notes and numerous safety flashes received from all around the world with banks man fatalities. Could you please advice me ways of convincing them in our alarm raised to protect employees? Thanks, Anar
