Posted By Jon Fox 100 Good afternoon, A colleague has been tasked with investigating the requirements to open a Nursery/Playschool for children upto the age of 5 years (to include children with disabilities). She has asked me to look into the Health and Safety requirements for the above. I hold the NEBOSH Gen Cert, Dip 1 and am part way into my NVQ 4, however i have no experience in the above field. I am specifically looking for direction and guidance regarding: Number of carers/adults to children, Max nos of children per area (e.g. room of 15m x 8m), Special requirements outwith the realms of "Normal Policies and Risk Assessments" Training needs of adults/carers Any help, guidance or examples of policies would be greatly appreciated Many thanks Jon

Posted By Linda Westrupp Have you tried contacting your local Education Authority or OFSTED (the inspection body for nurseries and education)? They will almost certainly have information on what is expected especially regarding staff/child ratios and policies. Linda

Posted By Diane Thomason Agree with Linda. The person who intends to provide daycare will need (by law) to be Ofsted-registered and will be inspected by Ofsted. This inspection includes safety aspects. Ofsted tells daycare providers to contact their local authority for advice on general safety, food safety and fire safety requirements.

Posted By Cathy Ricketts There are the national standards for child minding which you should find useful available from Ofsted (I think you can download them from their website).

Posted By Bill Parkinson Hi Jon I was involved in a previous life with a consultancy who also ran a nursery. You will need to contact OFSTED has they have a list of requirements which have to be satisfied and will also give you the staff/child ratios as they vary dependent on the age ranges. Regards Bill

Posted By Martyn Hendrie In addition to advice already given regarding Ofsted Your local county council probably has an early years team and may be able to help with advice on the National Standards. They are also the people that deal with issuing the government funding for pre-school children.
