Posted By peter gotch Hi Safetynut Perhaps one investigation will enable appropriate disciplinary action. Regards, Peter

Posted By Scott Fisher These clips are outrageous and just show that despite all the health and safety talks given to employees both on and off site this type of idiotic behaviour still happens. I would hope that someone will recognise these idiots and discipline them accordingly. I would also hope that the people bearing the brunt of these stupid pranks would press charges for common assault. There is also a clip entitled 'where's your hard hat' that shows someone getting hit over the head with a lump of wood. From this clip it is quite clear that the guy has been hurt from the impact. TOTALLY DISGRACEFUL

Posted By J Knight Hi Folks, Actually this stuff suggests a few things to me. One is, that condemn it as we will, this is almost impossible to prevent. What these lumpheads are engaged in is play, and people will play whenever they feel it is appropriate. We play, by and large, in a socially acceptable mode, I for example cycle, I know other contributors play various sports, some of you drive as a form of play and so on. It really is a quite deep human drive, so deep that people will do it even when its not appropriate, even when they put other people at risk. So they've had their training, so they may even have been given some behavioural safety stuff to do, and they behave appropriately while they feel they are being watched, but the minute they get too bored and the pressure's off, out come the cigarette lighters and the 'fun' starts. I remember as a teenager sliding down piles of rubbish covered with old plasterboard, having playfights with hoses and so on, teenagers and young people, and people in general, haven't changed that much in the last thirty years. Don't misunderstand, I'm not condoning this at all, and I am very clear about the role of horseplay at work (it hasn't got one). But indignation won't stop it, and I suspect that we have very few tools in our H&S and behavioural armoury which will, John

Posted By Diane Thomason Your're right John. But I don't understand why some people's favoured play involves hurting other people. I realise it's commonplace though.

Posted By J Knight Diane, yes, I too find it hard to understand why some people get pleasure from others' pain. The German's have a word for it, 'schadenfreude', though that's usually more to do with e.g. pleasure at anothers failure or bad luck, John

Posted By Robert S Woods It was probably all risked assessed. Non flammable bubble wrap, correct depth of insulation for height of dive. It was reported on the TV that they were hitting the guy with pieces of wood. Obviously never been on a site or they would have realised it was pipe insulation. Just the sort of thing I would have done once upon a time. I hope they don't all get sacked, although the guy with the matches doesn't have my sympathy if he does.

Posted By J Knight Oh, pipe insulation; I thought it was plasterboard (poor video quality). It evidently wasn't wood, 'cos of the way it broke; you'd cause substantial injuries breaking a piece of wood that size over somebody's head, John

Posted By Andrew Cartridge I don't think that it will take a "rocket scientist" to track these guys down, & I wouldn't want to be in their safety boots (if they were wearing any ;-)when this happens. Andy

Posted By Robert S Woods Andy, No time at all the company logo was on the back of the Hi Viz. Their boss was on the TV apologising last night. I doubt if their behaviour is reflected in the quality of their work. Wherever that is or isn't now.

Posted By Pete48 All, of course, if it was actually workers employed on a construction site? How many hi-vis jackets are there "out-there" that are used by people who do not work for the company on the back? Mind you have to admit that these videos have had an impact and good to see the sensible responses from those affected most closely. The wiser amongst us will have used them to advantage I am sure. How many of your staff laughed at first and then became a little quieter as they watched and thought about it? Best ten minutes of safety training for a while was the most encouraging feedback I got this week.
