Posted By Debbie S I have just been browsing jobs in Health & Safety and have just seen one where they have asked for a COSHH certificate (and yes I do know what COSHH is, the snow and cold weather hasn't completely addled the brain) but is there a course or something you do to get this qualification?

Posted By Debbie S Thanks for that.
Have looked at the link. Looks good for someone starting out in Health & Safety but am left now wondering why the job advert asked for that and said you had to have NVQ 4 as minimum.
Ahh well, the snow has definitely got to me.

Posted By Chris Packham Have just gone through the COSHH ACoP again and nowhere can I find any reference to a COSHH Certificate. COSHH merely requires whoever is doing the risk assessment and risk management to be "competent". How you define "competent" is another question. In my own specialised field I frequently find people with "Certificates" and "Diplomas" whose knowledge of the complexity of the interaction between skin and working environment is sketchy, to say the least. This has often led to COSHH risk assessments that have not reflected the true risks and where the subsequent action has even increased the risk of damage to health. What is essential is that, independent of whatever qualification you possess, you know your limitations and accept that no-one can know everything about health and safety. After all, isn't this forum just to help those who recognise this and are prepared to ask the question? Chris

Posted By Diane Thomason Chris is absolutely right.
If this employer thinks there is something called a COSHH Certificate that "qualifies" someone to do COSHH assessments they might have got the wrong end.
There are courses in COSHH assessment (IOSH and CIEH do them for example) which lead to a certificate, but that's a different issue to competence.
Maybe if you were interested in this job and it involves COSHH, you can explain that you can demonstrate your competence to do it without possessing some certificate?

Posted By Alexander Falconer BEBOH (now BIOH) used to produce courses/certification in certain subjects (inc COSHH) which appeared to more than satisfy the competency requirements!
Not sure if this is still the case

Posted By Raymond Rapp I suspect it is a Freudian slip or mostly probably someone in HR is hard of hearing - as in NEBOSH Certificate.
Made me laugh anyway.
