Posted By Adam P I'm currently a safety rep with a large steel making company.Which qualifications should i ask to be put forward for to start me on the health and safety ladder. What order do people usually do their qualifications and how long (on average) does it take to become a qualified safety instructor?

Posted By JLR Hi Adam
There are different routes you can take. NEBOSH General seems to be the most common starter qualification but NVQ's now also provide a good option.
If you're looking to be an instructor you will probably also need to do a teaching/ training qualification. C&G 7302 seems to be a common one.

Posted By Doug Russell You say you are a safety rep. If that means a trade union rep then consider doing the TUC occupational safety and health certificate course, sometimes called stage 3. Takes 36 weeks to do (I think) but won't cost you anything. At the end you are entitled to TechIOSH membership. Its a good start on the ladder.

Posted By Hazel Harvey Doug's advice is sound but bear in mind that no qualification entitles you to a named IOSH category on its own. For the Technician Member category you also need 5 years of experience in a health and safety role. Any of the level 3 certificates (see our list in 'about membership') will give you a good grounding in health and safety. Hazel Harvey Director of Professional Affairs
