Posted By Merv Newman I've heard somewhere about multi-language cards to help Doctors and Nurses to communicate with foreign patients ; What is your name ? Where does it hurt ? that sort of thing.
Can anyone help me with a source or an example ?
With the ski season on the local hospitals are getting lots of German, Dutch and Scandinavian patients in (and some English) and the general lack of language skills is causing real problems.

Posted By Kieran J Duignan Hello Merv
The ingenuity of your questions is even better than the ingenuity of your answers on this website.
While I don't know of any set of cards of the kind you have in mind, I should be pleased to co-operate with you in producing a set of German-English-French cards, as a joint venture.
Allez!

Posted By Merv Newman Hi Kieran,
good to hear from you. We can deal with the English and French sides but help with German and any other languages would be good. Arabic, anyone ?
We have quite a few doctors and nurses (the most common occupation in our village) as friends but can you suggest maybe 10 basic questions ?

Posted By Kieran J Duignan Assuming we are moving into task-centred mode, Merv, I'm inclined to view the job in the manner of the ergonomist I profess to be (i.e. I've just paid my annual subscription to the relevant 'club'). If you like to contact me offline on kieran@enabling-space.com, I'll reply fairly promptly with a first stage task analysis: to do the matter justice, I think it's important to map out the task goals and operational contexts. From there, it would be possible to develop some materials for a trial. Provided, of course, I'm not in a stage of deep shock and mourning after Ireland's game against France in Dublin tomorrow.

Posted By Philip McAleenan Merv, given that the season has started a quick way would be to list the key questions that the Doctors etc. need answers for and make the translations yourself, using a site such as Babel Fish, http://babelfish.altavista.com/translate.dyn . I have found this one very useful for general non-technical translations. Philip

Posted By John D Crosby Hi Merv The British Red Cross had a book that allowed doctors etc to ask questions to non english speaking casualties in medical emergencies. They also used to have language cards of the type you suggest. You might want to ask the French Red Cross if they have any or ask them to contact the British Red Cross.
Take care John C
