Hello all.

I am looking for some advice, guidance and information on dealing with this threat.

We have our policy and procedures in place along with information to staff. What I would like to know is, does anyone use a hand held scanner/metal detector to check suspicious letters/packages recevied through the mail?

There are numerous items for sale on the market but, are they effective/safe to use? Is there a spcific scanner/detector for this purpose?

I work in Local Authority circles and feel the risk to be fairly low, so I am looking for something that will be (dare I say it), "reasonably practicable".

Any help/advice would be most welcome.

Hi Adrian,

I also work in local authority, however haven't used any of the devices that you have mentioned. One thing I'd maybe suggest is speaking to your Civil Contingencies/Emergency Planning Manager as our Civil Contingencies Managers has cascaded a lot of information on this subject, some of which has been produced by the Home Office. He/She may be able to help with the devices also.

Hope this has been of some help.

Adrian,

There are devices that will check out your mail, but they are expensive (of course). Email me direct if you wish, and I will put you in touch with our man who looks after 'our devices'. I would question whether your organisation or its people are at significant risk, though.

Can I repeat my offer on an earlier thread to send anyone who emails me direct some benchmark material from Royal Mail on dealing with suspect packages?

Allan
