Posted By Phillipe What type of premises are you? What goes on at the premises? Do you need to ban this? You might be seen as a killjoy for banning this type of thing. All things have to be assessed, but is the place of work particulary hazardous? Can you not put in a simple procedure that people should follow if they wanted to do this sort of thing. Just a thought...

Posted By David Bannister Ron, you don't say when this is. If it's for a short visit on days off, at "hometime" or something similar then the infant is under the control and care of its parent. You owe it a duty of care as any other visitor. I would hope and expect that your office environment does not present any significant and uncontrolled risks. If however the infant is present for most of the working day then this is a different scenario. A workplace is no place for an infant. Suggest that this is best dealt with via the HR route rather than trying to put together another "H&S prevents... scenario"

Posted By Lilian McCartney Hi Ron, as previous reply it would depend on work activities on site. In our office people bring their kids in to 'visit' from time to time. This isn't discouraged here. At my last place of work the Manager had to step in when one person was coming in quite often and disrupting the work and on one occasion went off to lunch and left their baby with the receptionist - isn't there always one who spolis things? The 'rule' was made that they had to wait in reception and poepl go out to see her for a short time, kids weren't to be left with others. I agreed for that situation as it was getting quite disruptive. I think there was a fatality last year in Edinburgh where an employees toddler fell through the gap in the bannister of a stairwell - I don't know the details though - so wouldn't like to say anything on the actual cause.

Posted By Ken Taylor There's go general 'H&S Rule' on this. Some workplaces are actually for infants (eg nurseries and health care premises). As far as H&S goes, it's a matter for risk assessment - particularly in relation to meeting the employers duties to 'others' under HASAWA. However, employers will make their own rules on this issue taking H&S and other considerations into account. [I still remember the Councillor who left her baby in its carry-cot propping open the lift doors while she visited one of the offices on an upper floor in a Council building.]
