Surprisingly you dont need a lot!!! Obviously a reputation helps so you will need to start making contact with organsiations either before or on your return. Try and get someone to send you out a copy of the IOSH magazine SHP as there is loads of information on consultancies many of whom employ associates which is an excellent way to get back into the industry. It is quite likely that also you will be a bit out fo date with the legislation so maybe some form of refresher course might be a good idea as there is so much thats new.

Also there are lots of employment agencies offering short to long term contracts and again that might be a way of getting yourself up to date again with guaranteed money.

Dont forget you will need professional indemnity insurance and also perhaps some kind of liability insurance which can be pricey, but it s a brave consultant that goes out without it.
