Posted By James K Please correct me if I a wrong here. A restraint lanyard is 1 meter long but cannot be adjustable. We use harness and lanyards inside our MEWPs but the lanyard has a mini-block attached. We dont actually use restraints because of the nature of our jobs. I was always led to believe that a restraint lanyard was to prevent the person from exiting the cage of the MEWP or from standing on the mid-rails. Jim

Posted By Dave Wilson Can be any length as long as it stops you going near the edge or getting out etc.

Posted By Ali Restraint systems are fixed unlike retractable systems (fall arrestor). Thus fixed lengths is how long you want it to be - risk assess it !

Posted By Derrick Robinson I think the guidance from IPAF, for boom type MEWPs, is to use an adjustable rope restraint lanyard adjusted to the shortest possible length to allow free movement around the cage. Check out www.ipaf.org. Restraint systems are not normally used in scissor type MEWPs but if your risk assessment calls for one then a similar approach would work up to a point. As the cage of a scissor is bigger, then if you allowed full movement around it the lanyard would probably end up to long to act as a restraint. Also be carefull that not all scissor platforms are fitted with anchor points wheras all booms are.
