Hi,

I have been tasked with coming up with a 'Constitution' for our safety reps!

Has anyone ever heard or have access to a Constitution for safety Reps?

Also, to identify training needs?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bod

If you post your email I might be able to help with a draft Committee Charter for you to look at.

Just googled 'Constitution for Safety Reps' and came up with this: www.qub.ac.uk/safety-rep...ebpages/constitution.htm

Hi Dave,

I have already done that - was just wanting to source other areas, such as my fellow safety professionals.

Thanks

Im a bit confused by your posting.
Surely if there is to be any constitution for Safety reps it should come from the union that appointed them!!.
A problem I have heard on various courses Ive been on is that some safety reps feel that they are seen by management as working in safety for them and not with them to tackle issues together, maybe Im looking to deep.
Mark.

BOD,
I don't feel there is any problem with suggesting a constitution and in my experience Safety Reps are happy to have some formal structure.
The role of the Safety Rep is often difficult - if they work with management they are often seen as selling out but if they are in conflict they have less success getting improvements as managers don't like being dictated to.
Safety reps need to be included in decision making where possible. If this is done it makes the change process a lot easier.
All this coming from an ex safety rep and deputy convenor,
John

I can see nothing wrong with a 'constitution' if it helps to make the safety rep role clear, especially to line managers. There is a useful 'Safety Reps Charter' that was drawn up by the tripartite education industry advisory committees - http://www.hse.gov.uk/ab.../hifeac/repscharter.pdf. Some of it is industry specific but it could be a good starting point.

The recent inspection topic pack on worker involvement that changes HSE instructions to enforcement officers on the consultation regulations also has some useful things to say. http://www.hse.gov.uk/fo...nspect/workerinvolve.pdf

I have a flowchart for safety reps (and employees) to follow on the role of the safety rep. We produced it so that people wouldn't 'inundate' the safety rep with H&S queries but go to their line manager.

We also made one for the H&S Adviser (me).

In my previous employ we had written guidelines to help safety reps and managers (particualrly managers as the safety reps had union training) on the role of safety reps and what they could and couldn't do.

Lilian
p.s. I tried to e-mail you but couldn't
