Posted By Karel Simpson We have as a company decided that our electricans will be involved in the carrying out of PAT testing, however company policy states every two years for PAT testing but the elctrician seems to believe it is every 6 months for construction work. Does anybody know where I can find this information from? Is this correct on the 6 month basis or is it just good practise. regards Karel

Posted By Colin Richard Stokes It is down to assessment. We as a construction company PAT all our site electrical tools every 3 months and visually inspect weekly by the storeman. Our Head office equipment is however tested every 3 years. Hope this helps. Colin

Posted By Pam Hickey-Jenkin Hi Karel...! Generally on construction sites there is a quarterly regime....however, there is not a pre-defined time frame as such, it is partially dependant upon the work/company etc. you may find the following website of use though... www.pat-testing.info Hope you are enjoying the new role, Regards, Pam

Posted By Jim Walker Karel, A forum search would show the umpteen occasions this has been asked. Here is an answer I've posted in the past: IEE produce a CoP for testing & examination of In use Electrical Equipment - it cost £25 Have a read of this as it explains Pat testing in detail and lays down some very sensible test period criteria. Competent (to do PAT) persons ideally should have: City & Guilds 2377-01 and 02 - Management, Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment. My own opinion is anyone NOT using the IEE code of practice is neither doing the job right and most likely wasting money too.

Posted By Ron Hunter Generally before first use and then a quarterly combined inspection and test for hand held power tools (inc 110v). HSE Publication HSG141 "Electrical Safety on Construction Sites" has a table showing all this. A similar table appeared in older versions of HSG150 too. 50V hand lamps and appliances in site offices = annual combined inspection and test. Note that HSG141 suggests formal visual inspection frequency of monthly for 110v, weekly for any 220/240v. Formal visual inspection infers keeping a record of this inspection - not the same as a "User check".

Posted By Crim Is PAT testing still a recommendation or is it now a requirement. Either way on site equipment is 3 monthly or as required if sooner. Don't forget the operators pre use check as well.

Posted By ian milne From memory; I dont believe that there is a requirement that you 'must' pat test, just that you have to ensure its safe for use - but our fellow 'brethren' can correct me on this (i think 'leckie at work 89' regs perhaps). The H&SE do post a leaflet on their website of the recommended visual inspection and test periods. However, this (as always) should be based on risk assessment (yawn, stop me please) and how much abuse you see the equipment is getting. Visual inspections are definately needed, frequently if necessary. Not sure how this 'best practice' vs 'commercial' if used in an argument to persuade though. Please correct me if I'm wrong guys, its always good to learn more!

Posted By holmezy You don't have to PAT test, its just one of the ways of ensuring electrical safety. Periods between testing will be decided by usage, environment, users, etc and the enevitable RA. pre user checks are always recommended. beer time Holmezy

Posted By Karel Simpson Thanks to all who contributed in this forum. As stated this is a subject where recommendations are mainly in place, for the operatives that are mainly project work based we will adopt a 3 month at the latest approach but we are considering adopting a start of project approach for longer project i.e. 6-8 weeks+ as we carry this out internally, NICEIC qualifying manager and holder of the city and guilds quals as well, with our general maintenance operatives we are going along the 6 month approach for the time being as mainly light use and if deemed from the inspections generally carried out we will shorten this approach as only projects that use 110v on frequest basis, majority of our equipment is now battery powered (chargers obviously need testing). Once again thanks for help all. Regards KS

Posted By holmezy Karel, chargers need testing? Providing the plug and lead is ok and it doesnt get too hot, I'd be reasonably happy. Having said that, all the phone chargers got done last time cuz it was easier to let them do the lot, rather than pick and chose, and extra cost was negliable. It was surprising how many chargers appeared from drawers, cupboards etc. Beer time Holmezy
