Is IOSH the ideal Professional Institute to belong to if you are a Health, Safety & Environmental person involved with Construction on a daily basis? If not which Professional Institute would people recommend?

It is all a bit disjointed, I am actually a member of several, sorry many different chartered and non-chartered organisations.

How about working more on the model of the BOHS, with different faculties - well at least I think that is how they work?

Then how about merging the IOSH Construction SG with the APS??

This would benefit from IOSH's good standing, with more proactive approach of the APS - well maybe anyway.

Not the easiest of questions to answer any Institute is only as good as the members. Until the failure of a significant number of IOSH members to show any interest in the draft CDM ACOP (now an approved document), I did feel IOSH was the right professional institute. My views however have now changed.

Steve has made reference to the APS but my understanding is that they are not a Professional Institute that would cater for Health, Safety & Environmental Professional people who are involved with the day today management of site operations and activities.
They tend to be more involved with the Coordinator role (formally the PS role). Their interest is more in CDM driven issues rather than human factors etc.

Sorry I can't be more helpful but I am a slightly disillusioned Chartered Member of the Institute.

David is totally correct with his comments on the APS, though the APS is a relatively young organisation at about 10-15 years old.

In time I think that the APS will become a more credible and respected organisation, after all as mentioned on some other current threads, the APS already seems to have more credibility with the HSE on construction safety issues than IOSH. I think IOSH should look very carefully at how well established the APS is becoming, the one thing I would point out with the APS, is that they are currently trying to broaden their membership beyond that of PS's and CDM-C's.

I am not saying that APS is the right choice, but I would not discount them on the basis that they are not a professional institution, there after all many others in the same category as the APS, such as for example the CITB.
