Posted By William They are good practice though, as they should only be put up by an experienced scaffolder who has checked the scaffold is fit for the purpose intended and if the scaffold is in the process of modification then the scafftag is taken down to show it is not fit for use at that time. They may not be compulsory but they should probably be and in the event of something going wrong it will prove that a system was in place to check the quality of the work.

Posted By David AB Thomas Ref. Work at Height Regulations 2005 (SI 2005/735) Schedule 3, Part 2 Additional requirements for scaffolding - Regulation 8(b) 11. While a scaffold is not available for use, including during its assembly, dismantling or alteration, it shall be marked with general warning signs in accordance with the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 and be suitably delineated by physical means preventing access to the danger zone.

Posted By Pat Whelan Thanks for Info - I agree it would be good practice and they should be used more as they provide 'on the spot' history of scaffolding i.e changes to scaff etc. I wasn't sure what the legal position was and I couldn't find any reference to them in code of practice or regs .... much oblidged for info ... thanks again

Posted By Ali Scafftags are recommended. Not to be confused with "safety signs" - totally different.

Posted By Steve B Ali whilst I agree with your post, I think the point David AB was trying to make is that the WAHR requires signage on a scaffold during certain phases of construction etc. whilst scafftags are not compulsory they are more often than not the chosen option of achieving this.
