All,
Some advice please.
What are the main hazards in a prison ?
I have been fortunate to secure an interview as H+S manager with the prison service within an open prison. I would welcome any advice as to how to best impress my interviewers with key risk analysis, anticipated hazards and immediate impact improvements.
My background is retail and finance H+S so this is a bit new to me and would appreciate any one's constructive advice regards anticipated questions i may get and perhaps should ask.
I have a fair idea already but still would appreciate advice and guidance etc.
Regards,
Big C

I worked in a court cells looking after prisoners 10 years ago this is what I can remember:
Violence, (to staff-from staff-prisoner to prisoner etc)
Stress,
Drug abusers on cold turkey,
Drugs smuggled in, either inside the body or taped to the body,
weapons smuggled in,
Fire hazard increased so beware when doing the FRA,
Escape (open prison should house low risk but it still can happen), causing attack on staff,
Horseplay,
Hep B and other infections,
Loading/unloading prisoners onto/from vehicles,
Emergency evacuation procedures,
The above all relate to prisoners, there is also the prison building to consider i.e. laundry, kitchen, workshops offices and visitors to premises.
It's a starter for you - good luck on the interview.

Currently employed in the prison service.
In addition to what crim has indicated there are also the usual things to look for. COSHH, noise, vibration, manual handling, WAH, contractors and so on.
Some open prisons also have horticultural/ farming concerns on site as well.
The range of topics can be quite extensive.

Hi Craig,
One thing that has not been mentioned is Self Harm, having been a a Custody Office at the Military Corrective Training Centre at Colchester (Glasshouse) and a Health & Safety Manager for a private custodial company that is the one thing they are hot on.
Ligature Points i.e. Where someone would try to hang themselves. If it is an open Prison they may have access to kettles, scalding risk. Again with it being an open prison,Sharps may be of an issue by drug users, Fire is a big one, obviously your FRA will identify any risks.
Good Luck
Rod
