Hello all,
I am running a course on COSHH at the end of the month. Unfortunately the training pack we have purchased is based on the '99 regs. Please can anybody let me know what was changed in 2002 ? My thoughts are that it was because of Asbestos, Lead and CHIP becoming regs in their own right ?
Some of the questions in the exam paper refer to Safety Data Sheets, which I believe are to do with CHIP rather than COSHH and therefore don't really belong on the COSHH course at all..... or do they ?
Also, the stats (pie charted) are based on 97/98 info. Can anyone give me up to date information on:-
1. What proportion of workplace injuries reported each year result from hazardous substances ?
Answer provided in the P/P is 3%
2. In which of the following types of workplace do most injuries occur due to hazardous substances ?
Answer provided is service industries 51%(then broken down into other industries i.e agriculture 1%). Also, I would like some further breakdown info on 'services industries'. 51% is the figure quoted, but what is the breakdown on the 51% ?
3. What proportion of enforcement notices served by the HSE are to do with COSHH ?
Answer provided is 12%
4. What proportion of reported injuries due to hazardous substances are either fatal or major ?
Answer provided is 20%
I have searched for this info, but can't seem to pinpoint it anywhere.
On a slightly separate note, is it worth making a complaint to the awarding body about this ? If the exam questions aren't 'directly' relevant anymore then surely they shouldn't be issuing questions on it ?

The Safety data sheet is produced in accordance with and to comply with the provisions of CHIP, However the COSHH regulations require a risk assessment of the actual task the substance is being used in. The legislation specifies amongst other things that the risk assessment should include:-
- The hazardous properties of the substance
- Information on health effects provided by the supplier, including information contained in any relevant safety data sheet
- any relevant occupational exposure standard
This information is contained within the safety data sheet and this is where it fits into COSHH. Therefore I would suggest that it is an important element of your training.

Paul Evans of HSE gave a webinar on the changes in COSHH last autumn for the BOHS. You will find the Powerpoint slides on the BOSH website. I also gave a presentation on "What the safety data sheet doesn't tell you and you really need to know.", also for BOHS and notes are also on the BOHS website.
Safety data sheets are generally not suitable for a COSHH risk assessment, certainly where skin exposure is concerned. If you need more on this there is a document on our website (www.enviroderm.co.uk) in the section News and Views that you can download for free.
