A client has just contacted me asking what they need to do/who to contact to have 20 barrels of old oil and coolant (metal cutting fluid) removed? As I understand they would have to register themselves as a producer before anyone will take it. Am I correct, what's the next step and does anyone know of a reputable firm in the Manchester area that will remove it.

I would contact either the Environment Agency or a well known waste management company.

My understanding is that you are correct, the producer would need to be registered as a hazardous waste producer in order for arrangements to be made re:disposal.
As for a reputable company, we use a company called safetykleen down here to dispose of our waste oil etc. Not to sure if they are national or just based in south west but i'm sure a google search would determine this.
I hsve no direct connection with safetykleen so please do not see this as an advertisement.
Many thanks and good luck.

Thanks for the help.
It's now sorted. It took a few minutes for the penny to drop: they had to be registered as a hazardous waste producer or they should not be able to buy new oil and coolant.
The stuff they had was old chemicals they found in a transport container which hasn't been opened since they moved to the site six months ago.
It's being removed by a local hazardous waste handler.

We use these based in Nott's who might be able to recommend someone local to you.
