In order to obtain CPD points for the existing cycle and to update my competence of Fire Safety issues I am planning to complete the new Fire Safety and Risk Management Certificate.
When I ask the course provider CRS concerning the course , they ask NEBOSH who advised that I had to complete the NEBOSH Certificate Management training & paper before I sat the Fire Paper .
I completed my certificate in 1993 and the NVQ4 in 2000 - I am CMIOSH.
What do other H&S Professionals think of this requirement? - I thought that CMIOSH confirmed our competence .

Richard,
If you're CMIOSH I honestly don't think the course would be much use to you - unless you haven't touched on fire for many years.

I'd recommend any of the IFE courses for someone of your level.

Richard,

Sounds like your talking from experience there. Have you done the course? What do you recon? I'm on it next week.

Reply from NEBOSH:

Richard, (the first) you do not have to take the Management Paper at all. You can choose to take just the fire unit on its own if you wish. On passing the examination, you will receive a certificate showing your success in this unit.

The Fire Certificate is at the same level as the National General Certificate. Much of the content will have been covered at Diploma. However, it does cover the new legislation and if fire wasn't something you dealt with at the time you did your Diploma or equivalent, you may find it a useful refresher.

Thank you very much for your clarification, it is very helpful. However for the record, and for those viewing this thread, as Richards proposed centre for this qualification I need to state that the advice we gave him was based upon a discussion I had with a member of NEBOSH Staff arounf 10 days ago, who were presented with the scenario as Richard describes.

If we need to discuss this further can I suggest we take it offline.

John, the advice you gave Richard was correct, based on Richard wishing to achieve the entire qualification. In this case, Richard indeed needs to re-take the NGC1 (i.e the safety management) paper from Certificate because we are not allowed to counts results from more than 5 years ago in issuing new qualifications. I have also replied to Richard off-forum to explain this in more detail.

I was pointing out to Richard that the unitised nature of the fire certificate means that he has the choice of just taking the fire unit on its own.

I am CMIOSH and sat the Fire Certificate. Whilst many of the topics were covered at Diploma level I found studying the subject again was useful and refreshed my memory. Teresa is correct the two modules have separate certificates. However I found it refreshing to study the management section again. The new legislation regarding fire will certainly be ground breaking and if applied should prove to be as important as HASAWA was to reforming Health and Safety legislation.
