Posted By Geoff Sanders My employment takes me into many warehouses and I find different levels of committment to racking safety. The new HSG 76 formalises the SEMA Code and I wondered how IOSH professionals view this - is it just a re-statement or a definite firmer direction by HSE.

Posted By Ian G Hutchings Geoff I am not particularly familiar with the code. Existing legislation clearly covers hazards in the workplace and the quality and suitability of racking still comes under this (albeit not expressly). It must be fit for purpose, structurally sound for the loads and inspected at adequate frequencies. I have also found that damage to racking by fork lifts and other causes is symptomatic of deeper health and safety issues. Regards Ian

Posted By Geoff Sanders thanks for that Ian - I understand that the HSE76 is to be issued at the end of this month and, I believe, it now directly reflects the very safety orientated SEMA Code of Practice.
