Hi all,

This is a genuine post, I'm not looking for sarcy comments from anyone please in relation to the fact that i had been caught speeding recently. I held my hands up and paid the fine. All done and dusted now. I must say though that i now drive with my eyes constantly switching from the road to the speedo, and tailgaters get my back up, road rage may well be my next issue.



Ok the question/Problem..............



Despite speed bumps and adequate speed limit signage, we are still getting personnel exceeding the site speed limit, whether it be when they are leaving work or whether it be a contractor on site. We are currently reviewing our on site traffic management to improve it and this is one of the factors that we will be looking at.

Does anyone out there have any additional control measures that we could implement or some beneficial propaganda posters.

I had an idea of maybe borrowing a speed gun from a local constabulary (if allowed) and to set up a speed trap, preferably on comic relief or children in need day and fining everyone say £1 or £2 who has been caught speeding, OK no one will have an obligation to pay the fine and all monies would go to the relevant charity but I'm sure that this would get people thinking about on site speed limits,especially those that are caught. The stats from the day can be publicised to all (of course no names named)and the person found to be speeding by the most spends the next day in the shackles where they have wet sponges thrown at them (Risk assessed of course.)

Does anyone else have any other bright/quirky ideas that would help raise awareness amongst the workforce?

When I used to drive to work, parking spaces were always a privilege, not a right.

Set the speed limit for what you (and senior management) consider to be safe, and then enforce it.

Gimmicks are going to make a joke out of it and will not work long term.

Speed guns/traps/signs are relatively cheap now so set one up and publicise a zero (or maybe 2 strike) tolerance.

Those who speed lose the privilege of parking outside the workplace.

For delivery drivers etc., make it clear to your suppliers that you will not tolerate speeding by them either.

its your site so you can impose rules -
we simply banned contractors from using their vehicles and charged them if they had not performed re their contract - its worked a treat

strong positive action is required by management for your employed people - don't wait for an accident to happen

As you know I am for positive reinforcement. Recognising and rewarding those who get it right (mind you, a good kicking for those who get it really wrong does make me feel so much better)

So, a BIG sign about a mile away, announcing a £1 fine for the speeders and a big kiss (choice of sex of kissee) or a free something or other for the Goodies.

Just to add to the last. This week I worked on a site where the training department gave out two coffee machine tokens per day per trainee.

Not everyone takes machine coffee so I usually start the week there with quite a few spares from the last time.

They are only worth the price of a cup of coffee but as token "rewards" for good answers or good presentations they go down a bomb.
