Hi
We are re-stacking/re-organising and I need to calculate/provide maximum numbers to the planners
These are long standing buildings used as office premises.

Currently going through Building regs Doc B. (yes the new edition, though tables remain the same)

Being cheeky and refreshing myself does anyone have quick calculations/simple method/guide to calculating these numbers.

Any info much appreciated
Mike

Hi Mike,

If I recall it is 11m3 per person, discounting ceiling heights above 3m. This is before any furniture and the like is put in place.

Once furniture/equipment is installed, the workspace must allow free access/egress, bearing in mind travel distances etc.

Mike

Is it the space requirements under Regulation 10 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations you are after or the requirements for Building Regs doc B?

If it’s the former then I have a calculator that I email to you.

Regards,
Ian

Is that not specific to the DSE regs?

Is the question not related to fire safety?

Thanks for info so far

This is primarily related to Building Regs door/stairwell widths calculations.

11m3 is the Workplace regs space limit and would you believe it Part B buiding regs work to different standard which is 6 square metres per person in office areas.
Wouldn't it be good if it could all be standardised

Ian
would appreciate copy of calculator you mention as once have checked the fire will have to compare with Workplace and see which one wins.

regards

Mike

fire regs allow 6m2 per person. So take your floor area and divide it by 6 (unless you know the number of persons that will occupy a room). This should give you the maximum you are likely to have in your office. From this decide how many exits are required, don't forget to discount the largest exit where two or more exits are required. 1 exit for 60 persons, 2 for 600 and 3 for more than 600. Minimum exit widths 750 for up to 60 persons (but then you must also consider disabled persons), 850 for 110 but you can the figures from the tables in App Doc b. Stair widths must not be narrower than door widths and corridors should not get narrower as you go along.

Thanks everyone for info.

has all worked out now and must admit that as this is refresh/refurb into existing occupied premises/office areas, all doors and stairwells are existing and decided to use RRO
and new HM government guide for offices and shops as opposed to Building regs Document B.

This provides easier and general info and there is slight increase in allowed numbers compared to BR Document B.

At the end using Office guidance worked out at 200 per floor

Using Doc B came out at 180 per floor

once again thanks for all comments it kicked the brain into gear

Mike
