Posted By Adam P Hi, I'm a union safety rep for a large company. The TUC certificate is on offer for me to do. Can someone please give me some info on the qualification? i.e. What it's equivalent to etc. I would also like to do the NEBOSH general certificate before moving on eventually to the diploma. Is it worth me doing both the TUC cert and the NEBOSH cert or just one of them? Thanks

Posted By Raymond Rapp Adam When I did the TUC Cert back in 2000 it was equivalent to a NVQ 3 and it was seen as an alternative to the NEBOSH Dip 1. I believe things have moved on since then and the NEBOSH Dip covers both Dip 1&2 now. That being the case there seems little advantage in doing it now purely from a qualification perspective. Having the TUC Cert I went straight to a MSc in H&S, which would still be an option if you so wish. The NEBOSH Dip is still seen as the 'benchmark' and therefore worthy of consideration. It is not the be all and end all though. Ray

Posted By Adam P So would it just make more sense for mr to go straight for the NEBOSH GC?

Posted By ITK Adam I did both, but then (1999) the NEBOSH Cert did not give TechIOSH (then TechSP) status. I would say as they now both give TechIOSH status go for NEBOSH, it is more recognised by employers than its TUC counterpart. Be aware you will be very fortunate to land a H&S position armed with only the certificate, you need to aim to gain a GradIOSH qualification if you decide to pursue H&S as a career. Good Luck.

Posted By Alan Hoskins Hi Adam, From another point of view, there is (I believe) a considerable cost difference between the certificates, which might be an influencing factor. Alan

Posted By Jason Wiggins Adam, I currently a Senior Trade Union Safety Rep for a large motor manufacturer. I completed my TUC Occupational H&S in 2004. This gain me Tech SP (now Tech IOSH) qualification. The benefits of the TUC route is that it may be paid for via your Union where as the NEBOSH might not be. There is a cost implication involved via the NEBOSH route. I'm currently looking to take the NVQ Level 4 in Health & Safety which I'm hoping will give me a better qualification (Equivalent to Diploma level). If you wish to talk off line then please email me. Best Of Luck Jason

Posted By Adrian Clifton Adam I was a Safety Rep for 21 years and completed my TUC Cert in 1997. The course was free and gave me a good starting point to continue my H&S education. From there I went on to complete a SHE Management Diploma at a local university (the Cert gave me the minimum qualification to enter Uni). I am now CMIOSH and at a much cheaper cost than persuing NEBOSH. If you have the chance to go via the TUC route, give it serious consideration as it is much more likely to be accepted by your employer. I personally feel that this route also helps to give a 'two-sides-to-the-coin' view to H&S. Good luck with your future studies. Adrian

Posted By Adam Hi all, by the way my name is also adam and surname begins with P. I have done the TUC Stage 1 and 2 courses in the early ninety's and also NEBOSH Cert and DIP 1, and also the NVQ4 OHSP, and have employed staff with the TUC diploma, Nebosh certificate and BSC Diploma. I would say from experience if you are looking at a career in safety the candidates with the Nebosh Cert are always preferred and do demonstrate a higher level of understanding THAN THE tuc and bsc trained cansdidates that I have come across saying that, Experience also counts when making a decision to employ someone, but that being said, there is a stigma attached to the TUC Qualification that disuades employers and disadvantages candidates unfairly. Some of the smartest people I have came across over the years were ex trade union health and safety reps, but canbe hard to manage, at times.
