Posted By joanne doherty Could anyone give me any pointers as to information relating to ergonomic risk and couches that can not be adjusted when carrying out gynaecological proceedures. This relates to a back injury sustained whilst carrying out a smear test so the position of the professional was that of bent over and twisting to the left, the resulting injury being 2 slipped discs and severe sciatic nerve irritation.

Posted By Adrian Watson Dear Joanne,
I suspect that nobody can answer this here. You are asking about a specific injury in specific circumstances.
The risk of injury is dependant upon:
Who was doing what, when and where; What was the task environment and what were it's variables (hot, cold, draughty, cramped; The bio-mechanical factors producing the injury (strain from falling, twisting, bending).
Give me a bell on 07944 789632 and I'll give you some pointers.
Regards Adrian

Posted By Ron Young Hi Joanne, I'm not in the medical field but what little I do/think I know of the procedure you mention, I would be amazed that it would cause the injuries mentioned. I'd tend to put it down as the final event to a chronic condition brought on by sometimes years of physical trauma to the affected areas. Literally, the straw that broke the camels back (excuse pun).
