Posted By Adam Hi is there any specific legislation pertaining to children and horse riding? does the Activity Centres (Young Persons Safety) Act 1995 cover this activity or is there any special acts or regs other than general H&S? The centre is a registered charity also. All advice welcome, ps the HASAWA 1974 and six pack are already identified for the work force.

Posted By Sarah-Jane Brown All riding establishments are licensed by the Local Authority under the Riding Establishments Acts 1964 & 1970. To maintain a license establishments receive yearly inspections to ensure the welfare of the horses and the safety of the riders. The quality of these inspections can vary however. There is little specific legislation pertaining to children although there are regulations making the use of riding hats compulsory for U14s. If an adventure centre offers riding as one of it's activities then it may also come under the Activity Centres Act but individual riding schools or trekking centres will not. Good centres may also get voluntary approval from establishments such as BHS (British Horse Society) or ABRS (Association of British Riding Schools). Approval from one of these bodies could demonstrate higher standards. Have you encountered a specific problem?

Posted By Margia There was an HSG on riding schools but I can't see it listed in the catalogue at the moment so maybe it's out of print, but you should be able to access it through a library. Do you have to do a risk assessment? I assume from your post that you're a non-rider - if so take a rider along with you because they'll be able to pick up on the points that you might miss. You can also tell a lot about a riding school by the state of their muck heap! Seriously - if the muck heap is well managed then it's more likely to be a well run establishment.

Posted By Sarah-Jane Brown The HSG has been withdrawn. The CIEH have procuced some guidance for inspectors that may be helpful. http://www.cieh.org/libr...ety/guidancelivery_3.pdf

Posted By karen sinclair-williams My husband and I wrote the guidance referred to by Margia on behalf of the CIEH (www.cieh.org) and ensured extensive consultation with the British Horse Society, HSE, LACORS, Association of British Riding Schools etc. As part of the process we undertook a major inspection programme of riding establishments in Surrey and are happy to give advice to anyone embarking on similar inspections/advising proprietors etc. Hot topics in the horse press at the moment due to litigation include protective headwear when turning out/catching horses and systems applied when instructing pupils particularly when jumping.

Posted By B Smart I have just read (briefly) the "Health and Safety Guidance for inspections of horse ridding establishments and livery yards" mentioned above, and in comparison to HS(G)105 Health and Safety in Horse Riding Establishments, it is a good update and in many ways offers much more information and advice. Definitely worth downloading, also a great read. I would, however like to see a compilation of generic Risk Assessments for horse ridding establishments if anyone has any, it would be greatly appreciated. B. Smart
