Posted By normw As a SHE Advisor with several years experience in an engineering environment. I have decided to take the plunge and work for myself. The problem is & I am sure many more have experienced the same issue, is how much to charge. Do I ask for an hourly rate, a day rate or a set fee for individual assignments? I will be offering to design & implement full safety management systems for small businesses who don't understand fully their legal requirements, or who simply can't justify employing a safety advisor. As this is a new venture, I obviously need to attract potential clients, but I will still need to make a living! Any advise will be most welcome on this subject.

Posted By Ian G Hutchings Norm If you do a search on the forum there are several threads on the same topic. Does your livelihood depend on the income? If so please please make sure you have a market. Do not think for a minute that people will just come to you or be interested in health and safety, especially the small companies. You will need to offer something slightly different. If you are targeting the small business for an ongoing support service their decisions will mostly be based on price alone. Whilst the SME market is large in the UK, there are also thousands of health and safety consultancies offering the same thing. It may be worth looking into your local chamber of commerce and business link for assistance with marketing. Good luck Ian
