I'm looking to produce or obtain a checksheet/ ticklist of issues to check before a mancage is used on a telescopic handler on a construction site.

Things I want to include are LOLER requirements for lifting persons, suitability of attachement, anchor points for harnesses, ground conditions, environment awareness (overhead power lines), use of flt (such as tilt mechanism to be switched off), full check to ensure it is the best option (based on duration of work, urgency of work etc).

I can prepare one but I'm busy and would rather not have to re-invent the whel if I can get away with it - does anyone have such a checklist that they don't mind me having a copy of?

As far as I am aware this practice is now frowned upon by the HSE who take an extremely dim view of it. However I might be wrong, perhaps other forum contributors can provide enlightenment.

Before you go down the route of checklists - ask yourself "is this the mst appropriate piece of equipment for the job?". Why aren't you using a MEWP? Man riding cages are notorious for coming off or the occupants falling from them.

The HSE has provided spcific guidance for use of such cases - and they should only be used where there is nothing else available at all. All planned jobs should be done with a MEWP or equivalent (see several old thread on this forum). I successfully found better access equipment to replace all the cages at my previous company, and can point you in the direction of several excellent suppliers if you contact me off forum..

Forget it - I cannot think of an instance when the HSE would contemplaate acceptance of this arrangement for construction work. Also there is plenty of suitable kit around at keen prices so why bother?

HSE viewpoint spelled out in guidance PM28.

www.hse.gov.uk/workplacetransport/pm28.pdf.

I would assume that this particular task / instance could not be justified under this guidance.

Avoid - get a cherry picker or similar purpose-built device!

Hi all, thanks for the contribution.

I have a severe dislike of the use of non-integrated working platforms on the forks of a telehandler, but unfortunately there are instances where there is limited PRACTICAL alternative.

PM28, which I'm fully familiar with, sets out clear guidelines about their use. If we could avoid their use, then we would.

However, in some instances, such as the need to repair a single length of drainpipe on a property that is otherwise fully completed, with no scaffold erected and no MEWP on site and none planned for the next 3 to 4 weeks, but the property needs to be released for occupation ASAP then it may be justified. It's a 5 minute job and much safer to be done from a FLT/ platform than from the ladder, and the cost of hiring in a MEWP or constructing access scaffold is prohibitive. The HSE actually endorse its use in PM28 for short, non-routine work where the alternative is the use of a ladder.

Anyway, my post was to see if anyone had a checklist (probably based on PM28) that I could have used to save me a few hours worth of work preparing one myself.

I've nearly completed my own checklist now, so the urgency is over.

Once again, thanks for the input.
