Can someone out there tell me if it is the employers duty to pay for prescriptive safety glasses for the employee who wears glasses and wants to wear safety glasses for work.
Thanks in advance

Posted By MT That depends. You have said that the employee "wants" to wear safety glasses for work. Has a risk assessment been done for the task he is carrying out and has it identified that eye protection is required? If so, and the person normally wears spectacles for their work, then you have to provide suitable and sufficient PPE. That may be either prescription safety glasses, or goggles or a visor which fit over the person's normal spectacles. It is important to ensure that the eye protection fits properly, especially if you are using over-glasses.

Posted By John Murgatroyd I seem to recall, having visited this in the past, that the employer does not have to provide prescription spectacles as ppe. If the employee already has them, then the employer is required to replace them if another pair is needed. The employee pays for, and provides, the relevant precription.

Posted By cara If safety glasses/goggles are needed to complete work safely - surely the employer is obliged to pay for them?!

Posted By Bob Shillabeer In short yes. If there is a need to wear safety glasses the employer has a duty to provide them. If glasses need to be worn there are two option. Over glasses such as goggles or prescription safety glasses. There are quite a number of suppliers who often advertise is SHP.
It is worth remembering that the over glasses should fit properly or employees will not use them. They also need to look reasonably stylish to encourage wearing them.
