Posted By Matthew Lee I first met Alan nearly 30 years ago when I was a young and fresh faced Inspector who had just moved down from to the area and was working for the construction group. I found him kind, helpful and supportive and most of all a genuine person who was passionate about H&S but in a realistic and pragmatic way. Although our paths have not crossed for many years, I understand that he was in the HSE office a few weeks ago and asked one of my colleagues if the "boy Lee" was in and was disappointed that I was not in the office on that day - a reflection of his general thoughtful approach to life. He will be missed by many.

Posted By Christopher D Abbott Fran,
I was sad to read of your fathers death. Many years ago when I first started out, I posted for some help on this forum. He sent me an e-mail and after a small correspondence, he called me to help me solve a problem I was having. He was extremely patient with a newbie and I valued his kindness.
A sad loss to our profession. His legacy lives on.
Kindest regards to you and your family, Chris Abbott

Posted By Rob T My sincere condolences for your sad loss. On the day you posted this I received Allan's "out of office" e-mail which said he would be back in a few days and so a great shock.
I worked with Allan for the last few years on the IOSH International Specialist Group and his knowledge and input was exceptional. Allan's humour and directness was very refreshing in this profession and on more than one occasion when my mouth moved before my brain was in gear, I got a withering put-down from him (completely deserved). He was able to deliver this without causing offence, which is an absolute art-form that few people are able to do. He will be sorely missed.

Posted By Pete48 THERE is a prize which we are all aiming at, and the more power and goodness we have, so much more the energy of that aim. Every human being has a right to it, and in the pursuit we do not stand in each other's way. For it has a long scale of degrees, a wide variety of views, and every aspirant, by his success in the pursuit, does not hinder but helps his competitors. I might call it completeness, but that is later, ---perhaps adjourned for ages. I prefer to call it Greatness. It is the fulfilment of a natural tendency in each man. It is a fruitful study. It is the best tonic to the young soul. And no man is unrelated; therefore we admire eminent men, not for themselves, but as representatives. It is very certain that we ought not to be and shall not be contented with any goal we have reached. Our aim is no less than greatness; that which invites all, belongs to us all, to which we are all sometimes untrue, cowardly, faithless, but of which we never quite despair, and which, in every sane moment, we resolve to make our own. Ralph Waldo Emerson
Rest in Peace, Alan. Your example will remain a shining beacon to us all.

Posted By Merv Newman Fran,
I saw your message the day you put it up and could not reply. I was so shocked.
Allan was going to visit us in France last year but had to change his plans.
Sorry. And the ears (no, that is "tears") are rolling.

Posted By John_Webster Fran I have just read the sad news. Like so many I benefited from Allan's responses to my queries, and looked forward to reading his input to this forum.
My sincere condolences to you and the rest of his family, who should draw comfort from knowing that through his work Allan helped save countless people from death, illness or serious injury.
