Our Mining Engineers are occasionally required to work in underground mines in countries where ventilation and monitoring of air quality is not up to the standard of that in UK mines.

For this reason I would like them to carry a suitable personal gas detector fitted with sensors to alert levels of flammable gas, toxic gas and oxygen. I am focusing on the following:

• Flammable (LEL), calibrated to Methane.
• Carbon Monoxide.
• Oxygen.

I would appreciate any practical advice on this issue.

There are plenty instruments that will do what you require but I have always found Shawcity to be very helpful: www.shawcity.co.uk.

Hi Carl

Check out B W Technologies 'Gas Alert Micro5' it can be set up for various gases and there is also an option for a PID detector. I don't have the contact details to hand but the company can normally be found at the FM Show, which is where I first came across them. At this time I was looking for a gas monitor for use in various confined spaces and plumped for the Gas AlertMicro5 it can come with a variety of components and has an SD memory card reader that automatically logs the exposure levels whichcan be downloaded to an excel spreadsheet, and also has various alarm modes.

B W Technologies have a variety of gas monitors of varying complexities the Micor5 is at the top end of the list (and on a personal note, I have found it to be an excellent piece of equipment), details can be found on the web if you type in 'gas alertmicro5'.

Regards
Granville

There are loads of good manufacturer's around at the moment.
BW (at mentioned above) are at the cheaper end of the market but I have found them to be good.
Drager have a good small instrument X am 2000.
Status scientifics have the sturdy reliable PGD2, but this is a little on the bulky side.
Crowcon have the Tetra.
Shop around, but don't let the manufacturer's con you into buying an instrument over and above your needs. I would be suprised if you would need to pay more than £400 for an instrument.
Hope this helps, drop me a line if you need any more advice.
