my husband came home from work with back ache he has been off work for three weeks now hes been told hes got sciatica.
The job he does is carrying heavy gas bottles 47kg,this is a job for two men but hes been doing it on his own sometimes he can move or deliver upto 400 or more a week.
Could this be a cause for his sciatica if so what can we do normally he is fit and well .

Sorry this has to be a quick answer

Check out

Also to help

I suffer from Sciatica, mainly from excess cycling.
The best thing I have found is yoga!!

If he's not up for that - also it is a long term solution (not instant!) then an osteopath could be worth a shot.

I hope that helps

I think your husband needs to obtain copies of the manual handling risk assessment attributed to this job. If there is not one then his employer is clearly in breach - see the previous mail on the HSE link.

Clearly if he is doing it regularly then there should be one. equally is there a job instruction? - 2 man lift/use lifting equipment - clearly if your husband has been doing it on his own is there proof he has been instructed to get on and do it on his own - or is there an element of his own contribution - he was just helping out?

Has he seen the works doctor/nurse for health surveillance?

I am not sure if the lifting will have caused his sciatica but rest assured it will not have helped a whole load.

you also need to consider his back to work interview and medical assessment to ensure that he is not allowed to carry on in this role as he now has an existing weakness - unless the doctor says he is fit to resume (obviously) much less manual handling activities - if any at all

e.jay,
I doubt that he has been lifting them, empties may weigh 47kg but full bottles weigh approx 95kg!!
As others have said, there should be evidence of some operational controls that outline the safe way to move these bottles around. A mixture of mechanical aids and handling methods might be what one would typically find. Your standard "its a two man job" is unlikely to be the best or safest way to move them anyway.
You may wish to view this link, it gives some background and useful guidance on sciatica. For example, it highlights the importance of staying active but it also warns about avoiding any activity likely to put unnecessary strain on your back. Maybe that is something that needs discussing with your partners employer?
